From Me to You: Ghana - Vol. 3

Written: 06/24/2018

And just like that, it's almost over. The rate of the Accra phase of the trip began moving quickly, so, due to that fact and some other circumstances, I decided to go home a week early. I was very sound in this decision, and I believed that being home would allow me more time to focus on writing the many blog posts I have on my agenda before moving on to the next part of my summer. Thus, I only have four more full days here instead of eleven, which is much less than it sounds like.

Since making my decision, however, I've had moments of sadness as the end of my trip actually approaches. Despite some of the negative aspects of the trip that I talked about in Vol. 2, I've also had a wonderful time. Tonight, especially, made me appreciate the experience for what it is and has been. My eldest host sister is a bridesmaid in a wedding on Saturday - the day after I'm now scheduled to leave - and in preparation for the wedding, she threw the bride-to-be a bachelorette party here at the house, accompanied by a dance rehearsal session. Though I'm exhausted (only surviving off of three hours of sleep for the past sixteen hours), I decided to stay up and watch, upon their request. Not only did this result in one of my favorite parts of the trip, but it was also so wonderful to be surrounded with good music and good people. I was also informed that, had I stayed the length of my original itinerary, I could have gone to the wedding - which I would have loved.

For a minute, I had regrets about cutting the trip short; I thought to myself, "What if I'm about to miss out on something great"? That could be true, but I'd also like to believe that there's a reason why things are panning out this way. Regardless, now with so little time left, I'm going to try my best to focus in on what's happening in the moment and everything that I'm learning about, experiencing, and feeling. I'm excited to see what all is left for me here.

From Me to You,

Syd
